VA Tech Wabag Limited has secured a mega Public-Private Partnership (PPP) order from the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) for the refurbishment and long-term operation of a 45 million litres per day (MLD) Tertiary Treatment Reverse Osmosis (TTRO) plant at Kodungaiyur, Chennai. The order is classified as a “Mega” project, indicating a contract value exceeding ₹1,000 crore.
Under the agreement, Wabag will undertake the refurbishment, finance, operation, maintenance, and transfer (RFOMT) of the existing facility. The company will upgrade the plant to restore its full capacity of 45 MLD within 18 months, after which it will operate and maintain the facility for 18.5 years to ensure reliable supply of treated wastewater for industrial use.
The Kodungaiyur plant was originally developed in 2019 to supply treated wastewater to industries in the Manali–Ennore and Manali–Minjur industrial corridors. Once upgraded, the plant will continue supplying high-quality recycled water to industrial consumers, supporting sustainable water reuse and circular water management in Chennai.
Wabag already operates similar advanced water recycling facilities, including a 45 MLD TTRO plant at Koyambedu in Chennai and a 40 MLD facility in Ghaziabad, reinforcing its leadership in industrial water reuse projects in India.
Company officials said the project further strengthens Wabag’s position in the Indian water sector and highlights the growing importance of water recycling and reuse solutions for long-term urban and industrial sustainability.
